With the Royal wedding just round the corner, beautiful sunshine and warm weather, there's nothing like celebrating with some good old British food and can there be anything more patriotic than a bowl of strawberries?

 

This heart-shaped fruit is the most popular berry in the world and there are over 600 varieties.

Strawberries used to be a luxury fruit enjoyed by royalty and the wealthy, but these days it is affordable and widely available.

Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamins C and K. They also contain fibre, and some manganese, vitamins B1, B5, B6, folic acid and iodine. In common with other berries, they contain compounds called anthocyanidins, which are anti-inflammatory, and may help protect against cancer and heart disease. Of course, one food cannot do all this alone, and the recommendation would be to include strawberries as part of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle.

Strawberries are very perishable and should be kept in the fridge. They may also be frozen and then would be perfect to use in desserts or smoothies.
