Cardiovascular disease (an umbrella term used to describe all heart and circulatory disease) causes more than a quarter of all deaths in the UK (British Heart Foundation, 2017). Cardiovascular disease is a non-communicable disease and many risk factors increase your likelihood of developing it.
High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and obesity are all associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, yet these factors can often be caused or exacerbated by nutrition and lifestyle.
Doing exercise and eating a healthy diet can support the health of your heart, but what is the right diet for heart health? There is plenty of conflicting information out there. One day we are told to have a low fat diet, and the next, good fats are all the rage. There is in fact no ONE correct diet; there is only the right diet for YOU!
As a nutritional therapist, I use the latest nutrition analysis software to develop a diet plan for you that has just the right amounts of the different types of fats. After all, coconut oil is known for its health-conferring qualities, yet it still is a saturated fat and should not be consumed excessively. Likewise, omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory and should be consumed regularly to promote good health, however, salmon (rich in omega-3 fatty acids) should not be eaten more than three times a week, due to the levels of toxins found in many large fish.
